These are experiences you just can’t have anywhere else…
It was the pearling industry that put Broome on the map, but being the harvest site of some of the world’s finest pearls isn’t the only thing the small town, 1681km north of Perth, has going for it.
Situated on Yawuru land, Broome is a beautiful town that boasts a rich culture, spectacular landscapes, and plenty of once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
So, if you’re planning a trip to the pearl of WA’s north, don’t forget to add these three activities to your bucket list.
Head Out On A Leisurely Stroll With The Camels
Cliché or iconic – whatever you think of the camel trains traipsing up and down Cable Beach, jumping aboard for a ride is a ‘must do’ when in Broome.
It’s a little known fact that Australia’s north west is home to the world’s largest population of wild dromedaries – AKA one-humped camels. Though they’re not native to Australia, they are an important part of the north’s eco-system.
Just like there are for our native kangaroos and koalas, there are rescue centres for our wild camel population too. Some of those rescues end up with Alison Bird at Broome Camel Safaris, where they’re loved, rehabilitated, and trained, ready for a better life cruising along the beach.
Alison’s camels participate in three walks each day – morning, pre-sunset and sunset. The walks range in length from 45-60 minutes and leave from just north of the rocks ramp at Cable Beach.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of Cable Beach by camel!
Please note: We must reveal the bare facts with the majority of Cable Beach surprisingly a nudist beach. So, don’t be alarmed if you happen across someone living ‘wild and free’ while on your ride!

Hold Onto Your Hats On A Sea Safari Adventure
Feel your adrenalin pumping as you race through the world’s fastest-moving tides.
Jetting through giant whirlpools and tides rushing at 20 knots on a boat sounds like a recipe for disaster (and a wet t-shirt), but the team from Sea Safaris on Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm know the waters up this way like the backs of their hands. Really, you couldn’t be safer.
Having grown up on the Buccaneer Peninsula, they know every little thing there is to know about the ocean up this way. They’ll tell you about how they used to jump into the gushing waters at Escape Passage, and about the five-metre whirlpools they can’t wait to boat through when they happen once a year. They’ll even take you to a secret spot to see a local school of sharks.
Because of the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of the boats through the huge tides, this isn’t an activity for kids younger than five.

Get Sky High
It’s hard to grasp the true beauty of Australia’s north west without taking to the air.
Broome is breathtaking at ground level, but it’s truly something spectacular when you get a birdseye view of it.
Put all your fears about propellor planes behind you, board one of King Leopold‘s little Cessna planes for a scenic flight, and let your pilot fly you over some breathtaking towns around the Dampier Peninsula. There’s so much to see in this part of the world, from the dramatic red cliffs and turquoise waters at Cape Leveque, to the rushing waters of the horizontal falls up at the Buccaneer Archipelago. Whichever direction you choose to fly, you won’t be disappointed.
If you fancy a day trip to one of the remote communities out of Broome – like Cygnet Bay – King Leopold can arrange for that too. Heading up by air not only cuts out the drive time (great if you don’t have much time to spare), but it can also get you around the sticky situation of closed roads.
